Ascetismand Predestination
1) Ascetism:
It is a philosophy of self- denial, the idea that Christians should lead an austere life without
luxuries.
2) Predestination:
It is the idea that it has already been decided who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. God
had already decided your fate before you were born.
Education as a Social Institution
Education is a life- long process. It involves both formal and informal institutions of
learning
Formal Institutions include School through which we get higher education and finally
employment
It also helps in acquiring necessary skills.
Sociology understands this need as a process of transmission / communication of group
heritage i.e common to all societies.
Simple Societies
No need of formal schooling
Children learnt customs and ways of life by paticipating in activities with their adults.
Depends on particularistic values based on family, kin, tribe, caste or religions.
Complex Societies
Increasing economic division of labour
Separation of work from home
Need for specialised learning and skill attainment
Rise of state systems, nations and complex sets of symbols and ideas.
Schools in modern societies are designed o promote uniformity, standardised as
aspirations and universalistic values.
According to Emile Durkheim, no society can survive without a common base a certain
number of ideas, sentiments and practices which education must inculcate in all children
indiscriminately to whatever social category they belong.
Education should prepare the child for a special occupation and enable the child for a special
occupation, and enable the child to internalise the core values of society.
According to Functionalists, speaks in terms of general social needs and social norms.
