P. 10

This leads to the development of polarity over the participating atoms.

Examples of Molecules with Polar Covalent Bonds-

                   1. Water (H2O) is a polar bonded molecule. ... The oxygen "side" of the
molecule has a partial negative charge, while the two hydrogen atoms (on
the other "side") have a partial positive charge.

                   2. Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is another example of a molecule that has a polar
                       covalent bond.

Unlike non polar covalent compounds, polar covalent compounds conduct
electricity in their aqueous states, as they dissociate into respective ions on
               dissolving in water.

               Examples-

                   1. Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity.
Reason- It’s a covalent molecule and does not carry charges.

But impure water (water mixed with a small amount of salt or acid) behaves as a
               good conductor of electricity.

Reason- As water is a polar covalent molecule, it dissociates into it’s respective
                             2-
                        +
               ions (H & O ) and conducts electricity.
