Letter writing is an essential skill. Despite the prevalence of emails and text messages,
everyone has to write letters at some point. Letters of complaint, job applications, thank you
letters, letters requesting changes or making suggestions — the list goes on and on. Thus it
encourages all to write letters from an early age which will improve their communication,
social and handwriting skills, and teach them what they need to know about writing and
structuring letters.
What is a formal letter?
A formal letter is one written in a formal and ceremonious language and follows a
certain stipulated format. Such letters are written for official purposes to authorities,
dignitaries, colleagues, seniors, etc and not to personal contacts, friends or
family. A formal letter is a letter, written in formal language, in the stipulated
format, for official purpose.
When do we use formal letter?
When we write to organizations and people we don’t know

What is the style and diction of formal letters?
The style and diction in an informal letter may be free, simple and friendly and the language
has to be polite, standard and official.
Why do we write formal letter?
We live in a world of technology backed communication. E-mails, texts, etc are the most
preferred modes of communication. However, letters still have a major use and importance in our society.
Especially formal letters written to authorities or professional contacts, because they generally stay on
record.
