Rock may be formed by only one type of mineral such as gold, or a mixture of many minerals such
as Basalt. They can be easily identified. They have definite shape and colour.
Minerals can be of two types. They are
1. Metallic minerals: The minerals from which metals can be extracted are known as Metallic
minerals. Metallic minerals are those minerals which can be melted to obtain new products. They
are generally hard and have a shiny surface. They are mostly found in igneous and metamorphic
rocks. Examples of metallic minerals are iron, copper, bauxite and tin . Metals are used to make
machine, furniture, tools, wires, coins and utensils. Gold and silver etc. are used to make jewellery.
2. Non-metallic minerals: Non-metallic minerals are those minerals that do not change into new
products on melting. They are not so hard and have no shine or lustre of their own. They are
mostly found in sedimentary rocks. They are more abundant than metallic minerals. Examples of
non-metallic minerals are coal, petroleum. These minerals are used to obtain petrol, diesel, paints,
paraffin wax etc.
