P. 2
As the highest frequency is 4 and the value corresponding to it is 14 so the modal value
is 14.
Example-2: For what value of y is the mode of the following data equal to 7?
3, 5, 6, 7, 3, 4, 7, 3, 6, y, 7.
Solution:The given data is
3, 5, 6, 7, 5, 4, 7, 3, 6, y, 7
x f
3 2
5 2
6 2
7 3
4 1
The observations 7 has frequency 3.if y will be 7 then its frequency will be 4
The frequency of 7 should be maximum, since the modal value is 7
Therefore, y = 7
Example-3:The following table relates to the monthly salaries of 75 workers of a
factory. Calculate the modal salary.
Solution: The frequency of Rs 1600 is the maximum, which is 26.
Therefore, the mode is 26.
Modal class
In a grouped frequency distribution. it is not possible to determine the bode by looking at
the frequencies. So, here we first locate a class with the maximum frequency. This class
is called modal class.
Example: What is the modal class?
Class 1 - 3 3 - 5 5 - 7 7 - 9 9 – 11
Frequency 7 8 2 2 1
Solution: modal class is 3-5 as it has highest frequency.
