Some common names we need to know-
a. Alcohol- Ethanol
b. Absolut alcohol- Pure ethanol
c. Rectified spirit-95% of ethanol + 5% of water
Rectified spirit is used for medicinal purposes as a disinfectant by doctors.
d. Denatured spirit- Ethanol mixed with Methanol or Pyridine or CuSO .

To prevent the misuse of ethanol produced for industrial use, it is made unfit for
drinking by adding poisonous substances like –
- Methanol or
- Pyridine or
- CuSO
4
- Dyes are also added to colour the alcohol blue so that it can be identified easily.
This is called denatured alcohol.
- Unlike ethanol, intake of methanol in very small quantities can cause death
