7. Proteins are body-building foods. They help in the growth and
repair of body tissues. Pulses, milk, eggs, and meat are rich in
proteins. Children and recovering patients need more protein in
                         their diet.
                             a) What is the main function of proteins?
                             b) Name two plant sources of protein.
                             c) Children and recovering patients.
                   8. Vitamins and minerals are protective foods. Vitamin C helps in
healing wounds. Vitamin D is important for bones and is made
in the body with the help of sunlight. Minerals like calcium and
iron are needed for healthy bones and blood.
                         a) Which vitamin helps in healing wounds?
                         b) How is Vitamin D formed in the body?
                         c) Which mineral is required for healthy bones?
                   9. A balanced diet contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals in proper
quantities. It also includes roughage and water. Lack of a balanced diet can lead to
deficiency diseases such as scurvy, rickets, and anaemia.
                         a) What is a balanced diet?
                         b) Draw a balanced diet chart for a healthy, energetic boy of your age.
                         c) Name one disease caused due to poor diet.
                   10. Roughage is the fibre present in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It does not provide
nutrients but helps in the movement of food in the digestive tract. It keeps the digestive
                         system healthy and prevents constipation.
                             a) What is roughage?
                             b) Name one source of roughage.
                             c) Why is roughage important?
                   11. Cooking is an important step in making food tasty,
                         digestible, and safe. However, overcooking
vegetables can destroy important nutrients like
vitamins. It is better to cook food using methods that
retain nutrition, such as steaming or light boiling.
Washing vegetables before cutting is recommended
to avoid losing water-soluble vitamins. Covering food
while cooking saves energy and preserves aroma.
Avoiding excess use of oil and spices also helps make
                         meals healthier.
                             a) Name two cooking practices mentioned that help preserve nutrients in food.
                             b) Why should vegetables be washed before cutting and not after?
                             c) Do you think using less oil and spices makes food less tasty or healthier? Justify
                                your answer.
                   12. a) Riya observes that tiny white slender outgrowth has arisen from the seeds after
soaking them in water overnight. Such seeds are called sprouts.
                             (i) Name the white slender outgrowth-like structure which arises from seeds on
                                being soaked in water.

(ii) Do all seeds sprout? Write two examples of seeds that are eaten as sprouts?
                             b) What the ingredients present are in Vegetarian Sandwiches?
                   13. a) Compare the effects of overcooking and undercooking food on our health.

                                                                                                         2
