Similarly, zinc reacts with blue colour solution of copper sulphate to form a
colourless solution of zinc sulphate.
Zn + CuSO4 ZnSO4 + Cu
Zinc Copper sulphate Zinc sulphate Copper
(Blue) (Colourless)
On the other hand, copper will not react with zinc sulphate as it is less reactive than
zinc.
Cu + ZnSO4 No reaction
If an iron nail is dipped in a blue colour solution of copper sulphate then we will
observe that the blue colour changes to green and ferrous sulphate is formed. And
copper metal is deposited over the iron nail.
Fe + CuSO4 FeSO4 + Cu
Iron Copper sulphate Iron sulphate Copper
(Blue) (Green)
Uses of metals and Non – metals
Metals
Iron, copper and Aluminium are used to make cooking utensils, water boilers for
factories.
Copper metal is used for making electric wires for house hold wiring, electric
motors etc.
Aluminium metal is used for making electric cables and overhead transmission
lines.
Aluminium foils are used for packaging medicines, chocolates etc.
Iron metal is sued for making nails, screws, nut-bolts, pipes, vehicles etc.
Zinc metal is used for galvanizing iron to prevent it from rusting.
Gold and silver are used to make jewelries.
Mercury is used in thermometers.
Many more uses of metals are there.
Non-Metals
Oxygen is a non-metal which is used by all the living organisms for breathing
and respiration.
Oxygen is needed for the process of combustion.
Nitrogen is used for making fertilisers.
Nitrogen is also used in packaging foods.
Chlorine is used in water purification as a disinfectant.
