Lesson Notes
Reaction of metals with Base
Metals like Zinc and Aluminium react with alkali (water soluble bases) to form a salt
and hydrogen gas.
When Zinc reacts with Sodium hydroxide, then a salt (sodium zincate) and
hydrogen gas is formed.
Zn + NaOH Na2ZnO2 + H2
Zinc Sodium hydroxide Sodium zincate Hydrogen gas
Similarly, when Aluminium reacts with Sodium hydroxide, then a salt (sodium
aluminate) and hydrogen gas is formed.
Al + NaOH NaAlO2 + H2
Aluminium Sodium hydroxide Sodium aluminate Hydrogen gas
Reaction of non - metals with Base
Non – metals do not react with base.
Let us recall about the reactivity series of metals again.
Reactivity Series of Metals.
It is the arrangement of metals in the decreasing order of their reactivity.
