EMERGENCE OF SOCIOLOGY
• Three revolutions paved the way for the emergence of
sociology :
a) The Enlightenment/ the scientific revolution or the
Dawning of the ‘age of reason’
b) The French Revolution- the quest for political sovereignty
embodied in the French Revolution
c) The Industrial Revolution- the system of mass
manufacture inaugurated by the Industrial Revolution
THE ENLIGTENMENT / SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION

• European intellectual movement of the late 17 and 18
centuries emphasizing reason and individualism rather

than tradition. It was heavily influenced by 17 century
philosophers such as Newton, Adam Smith, Rouseau etc.

• A philosophical movement of the 18 century marked by
political ideas and an emphasis on rationalism.
The principle or practice based on opinions and
actions on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or
emotional response.
