Types of social Change
On the basis of pace: Social change may be Evolutionary (Darwin ‘s Theory) or
revolutionary (French revolution)
Beliefs and values: Changes in Ideas, Values and beliefs also leads to social
change.
Structural Change: Industrialisation and urbanisation led to change in the
structure of the society.
Cultural change: Sanskritisation and Westerniasation have brought change in
the culture.
Nature / Characteristics Of Social Change
• It is universal phenomenon.
• Speed of social change is not uniform.
• Social change results from the interaction of a number of factors.
• Social change occurs due to physical, social, Demographic , cultural and
technological factor.
Environment
• Environmental changes can bring social changes in two ways.
1) Destructive Changes
These are caused by natural disaster and are often irreversible.
2) Constructive changes
New discoveries in the environment can open up new livelihood options and
leads to social change in the society.
Technology and Economy
• It alters nature and relationships.
• It allows us to adapt to the problems posed by nature. For ex- Japan being
mostly hilly and cold country developed expertise in electrical and electronic
gadgets.
• Industrial revolution has caused massive social changes in almost all the
societies of the world.
