DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Li AND OTHER ALKALI METALS

(i)Li is much harder and its melting and boiling points are

               higher than other alkali metals.

(ii)It is least reactive but strong reducing agent.

(iii)On combustion gives Li O and Li N unlike other alkali
                                                                         3
                                                          2
               metals.

(iv)LiCl is deliquescent solid but other alkali metal

               chlorides don’t form hydrates.

                       SIMILARITIES BETWEEN Li AND Mg

(i)Both Li and Mg are harder and lighter than other

                       elements.

(ii)Li and Mg react slowly with cold water.

(iii)Both react with N to form nitrides.
                                                        2
(iv)Both cannot form peroxides and superoxides.

(v)Nitrates of both form oxides, NO and oxygen.
                                                                                2

(vi)Both LiCl and MgCl are deliquescent.
                                                          2
