Function
• MECHANICAL STRENGTH- Sclerenchyma is the chief mechanical tissue of
plants which provides them strength and enables them to bear various stresses.
• PROTECTION- It forms a protective covering around seeds and nuts.
• COMMERCIAL FIBERS- Sclerenchyma fibres of some plants are commercially
exploited, e.g., Flax, Jute, Coconut.
NOTE: What is Lignin?
[These are organic polymers that form key structural materials in the support
tissues. It is important in the formation of cell walls, especially in wood and bark,
because they give rigidity and do not rot easily. It acts as the cement for the
cells.]
