P. 3
Function
• STORAGE- Storage of food is the major function of parenchyma cells. In
storage organs, parenchyma cells are especially enlarged for this function.
• SUCCULENT ORGANS- Parenchyma cells of succulent organs store mucilage
and water.
• SUPPORT- The cells of the tissue remain turgid and provide rigidity or support
to softer parts.
• GASEOUS EXCHANGE- Presence of intercellular spaces between
parenchyma cells allows movement of gases and gaseous exchange
• WASTE PRODUCTS- Certain parenchyma cells store waste products like
tannin, resins, gums, crystals, etc.
(ii) Collenchyma Tissue
o They are living cells, round, oval and elongated in shape.
o Have little or no intercellular spaces as the corners of cell walls are thickened
with pectin.
o Present below the epidermis in leaves and stems.
o They give mechanical support to the plant.
Function
• STRENGTH- Collenchyma is a living mechanical tissue which provides both
mechanical strength as well as flexibility. Because of collenchyma, plant organs
can bend without breaking. provides flexibility to soft aerial parts
• GROWTH- Collenchyma allows growth and elongation of organs.
• STORAGE- Being living tissue, collenchyma stores food.
