Uses of Polyester:
Polyester is used to make pants, shirts, suits and bed sheets either by itself or as a blend.
Polyester mixed with cotton (called Polycot or Terrycot) is used for making shirts, trousers
and other dresses.
Polyester is also mixed with wool (called Polywool or Terrywool) for making suits.
Polyester being light, strong and non-stretchable, it is used for making sails of sail-boats.
It is used for making water hoses for fire-fighting operations and conveyer belts too.
Its water- resistant property makes it ideal for garments & jackets that are to be used in wet
or damp environments.
PET:
PET is a familiar form of polyester and is the abbreviation of the synthetic polymer called as
‘Poly Ethylene Terephthalate’.
PET can be made into a fibre or a plastic.
PET is very lightweight, naturally colourless, strong and impact-resistant.
PET, as a plastic, acts as a replacing material for glass.
Unlike that of glass, PET is shatterproof and is used to make bottles, jars and utensils.
PET is also used for making thin films and many other automobile products such as wiper
arms, engine covers, electrical encapsulations, etc.
PET is obtained by the esterification reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
