TASK: NOW WRITE THESE WORDS, WITH TWO DIFFERENT MEANINGS, BY FRAMING
SENTENCES OF YOUR OWN USING THEM IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS.
(To Be Done in Classwork Notebook)
So, what did you understand? Can you now define HOMONYMS?
Definition: HOMONYMS: are two words that are spelled the same and sound the
same but have different meanings. The word "homonym" comes from
the prefix "homo-," which means the same, and the suffix "-nym," which means
name. Therefore, a homonym is a word that has the same name as another
word, meaning that the two words look and sound exactly alike.
For example:
SENTENCE 1. The president addressed the huge gathering.
SENTENCE 2. May I have your address please?
the wordaddress in sentence no.1is
a VERB – ‘a formal speech delivered to an audience’.
the word address in sentence no.2is
a NOUN- ‘the particulars of the place where someone lives ‘
