               ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mary Dow Brine (1816-1913) was a children’s author. She was born in New York. Some of her
best works include Somebody’s Mother and Hearts and Flowers.
Somebody’s Mother shows the pain of a lonely mother. Mar Dow Brine was a nineteenth-
century poet. During this period, there was a war in America. The country was in the grip of

violence and poverty. After the war, the great work of rebuilding the nation began. Many young
men left their hometowns in search livelihood. Maybe, the old mother in Somebody’s Mother
had one such son and hence she was lonely.
