ACTIVITY 2 (page no-56):-To find out the conditions necessary for seed germination.
Observe the seeds in all the four bowls after 2-3 days. Do gram seeds in all the bowls
germinates?
Bowl Conditions present Do the seeds Germinates
Bowl 1 Air and warmth (sunlight and Seeds will not grow
temperature)
Bowl 2 Air and water Seeds will not grow
Bowl 3 Warmth and water Seeds will not grow
Bowl 4 Air, water and warmth (sunlight Seeds germinates to form
and temperature) baby plants
Steps for germination
Step1:-During the beginning stage of germination, the seeds take up water rapidly and this
results in swelling and softening of the seed coat at moderate temperature.
Step2-upon germination, seeds coat ruptures which help to emerge the radical (baby root)
comes out first from the seed, followed by plumule (baby shoot).
Step3-the baby root slowly forms the root system of the plant, while the baby shoot forms the
shoot system.
STAGES OF GERMINATION
A plant produces many seeds. However, not all seeds germinate. Some seeds are destroyed by
strong winds or rains, while some seeds are eaten by insects and birds.
