P. 3

When there is a word problem based on money, then we start the statement like – “Amount of
               money….”

                         OR

               “Cost of….”

               Example 2:
               Mr Gupta bought a grinder mixer set of ₹ 3485, a quilt for ₹ 2783 and a bag for ₹ 847. How
much money he has to pay in all?

               Solution:

                Cost of a grinder mixer=₹3485 Th H T O
                                                                                 2 2 1

                                                                                 3 4 8 5
               Cost of a quilt=₹2783 + 2 7 8 3
                                                                             + 8 4 7
               Cost of bag=₹847
                                                                             = 7 1 1 5
Total cost of all the items=₹3485+₹2783+₹847= ₹7115

Thus, Mr Gupta has to pay ₹7115 in all.

LEARNING OUTCOME: students are able to add two numbers in story sums using column
               method.
