WORD PROBLEMS
Learning objectives: Students will learn to add two numbers in story sums using column
method.
A word problem is a few sentences describing a “real life” situation where a problem
needs to be solved by the way of mathematical calculation.
Word problems based on addition are of two types:
a) When objects of two or more collections are put together.
b) When an increase in number takes place.
The key words used in problems involving addition are: sum, total, in all, all
together.
Rules for solving word problems:
Step 1: Read the question properly.
Step 2: Then identify the informative sentences and question sentence.
Step 3: Identify the operation.
Step 4: Frame statements and solve it.
Step 5: Then write the conclusion with statement.
When there is a word problem based on number of things, we start the statement
like- “Number of……”

Example1:
