Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through
colonization, use of military force, or other means.
Last quarter of the nineteenth century - Imperialism WHY? -
i. nationalism no longer retained its idealistic liberal-democratic sentiment of the first
half of the century, but became a narrow creed with limited ends.
ii. Nationalist groups became increasingly intolerant of each other and ever ready to
