               Main Features

                     The iron and steel industry is the basic industry
                     Steel is needed to manufacture a variety ofengineering goods like construction material
                       defence,medical, telephonic , scientific equipment and avariety of consumer goods
                     It is the index of a country’s development
                     It’s a heavy industry

               Where should the steel plants be ideally located?

                     Iron ore, coking coal and limestone are required in the ratio of 4:2:1 to make steel. Some
                       quantities of manganese are also mixed to harden steel.Fig. 6.4

               Significance

                     India ranks ninth among the world crude steelproduction with32.82 million tons of
                       steelproduction.
                     It is the largest producer of sponge iron.

               Steel Production in India

                     All public sector undertakings market their steel through,Steel Authority of India Ltd.
                       (SAIL) while TISCO marketsits produce through Tata Steel.
                     In the 1950s China and India produced almost the samequantity of steel. Today, China
                       is the largest producer.China is also the world's largest consumer of steel.
                     In 2004, India was the largest exporter of steel whichaccounted for 2.25 per cent of the
                       global steel trade.
