The iron and steel industry is the basic industry
Steel is needed to manufacture a variety ofengineering goods like construction material
defence,medical, telephonic , scientific equipment and avariety of consumer goods
It is the index of a country’s development

Where should the steel plants be ideally located?
Iron ore, coking coal and limestone are required in the ratio of 4:2:1 to make steel. Some
quantities of manganese are also mixed to harden steel.Fig. 6.4

India ranks ninth among the world crude steelproduction with32.82 million tons of
steelproduction.
It is the largest producer of sponge iron.

(SAIL) while TISCO marketsits produce through Tata Steel.
In the 1950s China and India produced almost the samequantity of steel. Today, China
is the largest producer.China is also the world's largest consumer of steel.
In 2004, India was the largest exporter of steel whichaccounted for 2.25 per cent of the
global steel trade.
