Industrial application of Hydrogenation reaction-
(Commercial preparation of Vegetable ghee from vegetable oil):
Vegetable oil undergoes addition reaction with Hydrogen, in presence of Nickel as
the catalyst to form vegetable ghee.
Catalyst-
A catalyst is a substance that alters the speed of a chemical reaction, but is not
consumed by the reaction;
Hence a catalyst can be recovered chemically unchanged, at the end of the
reaction.
Example- 1. Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts in biochemical reactions.
2. Nickel/Palladium/Platinumare catalysts used during Hydrogenation
reaction.
