LESSON NOTES
Uses of Metals and Non-metals-
➢ A metal's use is directly linked to its properties.
For example:
1. Shiny metals such as copper, silver, and gold are often used for making
decorative articles, jewellery, and coins.
2. Strong metals such as iron and metal alloys such as stainless steel are used
to build structures, ships, and vehicles including cars, trains, and trucks.
3. Some metals have specific qualities that dictate their use.
For example-
i. Copper is a good choice for wiring because it is particularly good at
conducting electricity.
ii. Tungsten is used for the filaments of light bulbs because it glows
white-hot without melting.
➢ Non-metals are plentiful and useful. These are among the most commonly
used:
For example:
• Oxygen, a gas, and is absolutely essential to human life.
1. We breathe it and use it for medical purposes.
2. It is used as an important element in combustion.
3. Degradation and decomposition of organic matter takes place in presence of
oxygen.
• Sulphur is valued for its medicinal properties.
1. It is used as an important ingredient in many chemical solutions.
2. Sulfuric acid is an important tool for industries, and is used in manufacturing
batteries.
3. Sulphur is a very good fungicide & is an important ingredient in antifungal
ointments.
