P. 3
We always compare left side number with the right side
number. Eg.- 19 < 21, we say 19 is less than 21
33 >17, we say 33 is greater than 17
When we compare a single digit number with a double digit
number then a single digit number is always smaller than a
double digit number.
Ex: 9 < 11, here 9 is a single digit number and 11 is a double
digit number, hence 9 is smaller than 11.
Ex: 13 > 7, here 13 is a double digit number and 7 is a single
digit number, hence 13 is greater than 7.
Now if we have 2 numbers to compare like 14 and 17. We will
see which number comes first in the number grid and which
number comes after. Here 14 comes first and then comes 17.
So, 14 < 17 or 14 is less than 17.
If we get numbers 17 and 27 to be compared then there is
another way.
Here the ones place number is same so we see the tens place.
In tens place 17 has 1 and 27 has 2. So as 1 is smaller than 1,
we write 17 < 27 or 17 is less than 27.
If we get numbers 49 and 44 to be compared then there is
another way.
We see the tens place number is same in 49 and 44. Both have
4in tens place,so then we see the ones place. In ones place 49
has 9 and 44 has 4. As 9 is greater than 4 so we write 49 > 44
or 49 is greater than 44.
Ex: 49 > 44 or 49 is greater than 44
We use words like lesser than, smaller than if the first number
is small, while comparing both numbers.
We use words like greater than, bigger than if first number is
big, while comparing both numbers.
