Making a FABRIC from a YARN:
There are two major ways using which yarn is converted to fabric, namely, Weaving and
Knitting.
a) Weaving:
• The process of entwining two sets of yarn simultaneously to make fabric is
called Weaving.
• In other words, two sets of yarns are used to cross over and under each
other to make a fabric.
• The process is done using machines known as looms (which can either be
operated by hand or by a machine), which interlaces two sets of yarn at
right angles to each other.
• Woven fabrics are generally durable. [Sarees, Shirts, Pants, etc.]
• Warp and Weft are the two basic components used in weaving to turn
yarns into fabric.
• The Warp refers to the yarns that are strung vertically on the loom.
• The Weft refers to the yarns that run horizontally on the loom and gets
woven over and below the warp.
b) Knitting:
• Knitting is the
process by which a
single strand of
yarn is used to
make a piece of
fabric.
• Knitting may be done
by hand or by machine.
• Knitting Needles are used to make fabrics by hand on a small scale.
• Knitted Fabrics consists of several consecutive rows of connected
loops of a single yarn that are interlocked.
• Socks, sweaters, mufflers, and a lot of other winter clothes are made
of knitted fabrics.
• As compared to woven fabrics, knitted fabrics are more stretchable.
