Lesson Notes
Fire Resistant Property of Fibres:
Different fibres show respond differently to fire flame. Let us see what effect a flame has
on a specific fibre:
1. Cotton (Plant Fibre) – Catches fire easily and continues to burn with a yellow flame
– Gives out a smell of burning paper or wood – Leaves behind Light, fine grey
feathery ash.
2. Silk (Animal Fibre) – Do not catch fire easily and does not burn for a long time –
Smells like a burning hair – Black crushable beads are formed.
3. Rayon (Semi-Synthetic Fibre) – Catches fire easily and continues to burn with a
yellow flame – Gives out a smell of burning paper – Leaves behind Light and
Feathery ash.
4. Wool (Animal Fibre) – Do not catch fire easily and does not burn for a long time
– Smells like a burning hair – Black crushable beads are formed.
5. Nylon, Acrylic, Polyester (Synthetic Fibre) - Do not catch fire easily and shrinks
away from flame and melts – No definite smell – Hard black uncrushable
beads are formed.
