The cat possesses the toy, and we denote this by use of an apostrophe + s at
the end of cat.
RULES OF FORMATION OF THE POSSESSIVE CASE:
1. When the noun is singular we generally add an apostrophe (’s) to show the
possession.
For example:
Rama’s umbrella = the umbrella belongs to Rama.
Jennifer’s computer = the computer belongs to Jennifer.
2. The plural nouns ending in‘s’ form their possessive case by adding only an
apostrophe (’) to it.
For example:
The flowers’ petals are yellow in colour. = The yellow petals belong to the
flowers.
All these horses’ tails are black. = The black tails belong to the horses.
3. The plural nouns not ending in‘s’ like men, women and children form their
possessive case by adding an apostrophe (’) and‘s’ to them.
For example:
Men’s lives are full of responsibilities.
Children’s lives are full of happiness.
4. The apostrophe s (‘s) can also be used with time periods.
For Example:
Have you seen today’s newspaper?
