PLURAL POSSESSIVE NOUNS
CONDITION EXAMPLE
In order to make a plural noun Women = women’s
possessive that doesn’t end in the letter Mice = mice’s
“s” all you have to do is add an
apostrophe and an “s.”
Cars = cars’
If the plural noun ends in an “s” it Rivers = rivers’
becomes possessive by adding an
apostrophe at the end.
NOTE
We do not use the possessive form for non-living things. For example, we should
always say:
The hand of the clock, not the clock’s hand.
The door of the house, not the house’s door.
NOTES:
A possessive noun is a noun that possesses something—i.e., it has something.
In most cases, a possessive noun is formed by adding an apostrophe +s to the
noun, or if the noun is plural and already ends in s, only an apostrophe needs
to be added.
The apostrophe works as an arrow, pointing towards the owner.
Examples:
In the following sentence, boy’s is a possessive noun modifying pencil:
The boy’s pencil snapped in half.
It is clear that the pencil belongs to the boy; the’s signifies ownership.
The cat’s toy was missing.
