L’interrogation negative et ‘si’ (Negative questions and ‘si’)
• We hae learnt to form negative sentences by placing ne and pas on either side of the
verb. Negative questions are formed in the same way for the I and II form
interrogation.
Ex. Vous ne parlez pas francais ?
Est- ce que vous ne parlez pas francais ?
Note : In the III form of negative interrogation, the pas is placed after the pronoun.
Ex. Ne parlez – vous pas francais ?
Ne regardes- tu pas la tele ?
We know to reply the questions by using :
Oui - yes
Non – no
There is another way to say ‘yes’ in French if you are disagreeing with a negative
question.
i.e by using ‘si’.
Ex. (a) Question : Vous ne parlez pas francais?
Answer : SI, je parle francais. (yes, I speak French.)
(b) Question : Ne regarde – t-il pas la tele ?
Answer : SI, il regarde la tele. (Yes, he watches television.)
Les adverbes de quantité (adverbs of quantity)
Certain adverbs which express quantity are followed by ‘ de ‘ without the article :
Beaucoup de A lot, much , many
Trop de Too much , too many
Un peu de A little , few
Assez de Enough
Moins de Less, fewer
Plus de More
