CHAPTER – Economic activities around us
Tertiary Sector :
Tertiary sector economic activities are a group of activities that include the services that
support both primary and secondary sectors, such as transportation, banking and
management of business.
This sector is also called the service sector. Some examples of tertiary sector activities
include fruit or vegetable vendors selling the farm produce to household consumers.
Doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers and pilots who provide their services to those who need
them are also included in the tertiary sector.
Interdependence among Sectors :
The three types of economic activities or economic sectors play an important role in the
process of conversion of natural raw materials into finished products for final consumption.
These three sectors are interdependent. For example, extracting pulp from trees to make
paper and finally producing a book, requires all the three sectors to work together.
Another example to understand the interdependence of three sectors is the co-operative,
named Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL). It was set up in 1946 under the leadership of
Tribhuvandas Patel and Dr. Varghese Kurien. The activities of this co-operative are
interconnected in the following ways
Primary Activities The milk used at AMUL is sold in the market at a later time. This
process is a primary activity as the product (milk) is obtained directly from the natural
resource (cows).
