11. All living things have a specific life span. Some live for a few days, while others live for
hundreds of years. The banyan tree can live for over 200 years, while a butterfly may
only live for a few weeks. Life span refers to the period from birth to natural death of
                         an organism.
                                a) A banyan tree can live for over 200 years, while a butterfly may live only for
a few weeks. What does this tell us about the life span of living things?
                           i. All living things have the same life span.
ii. Life span depends on how big the organism is.
iii. Different organisms have different life spans.
iv. Butterflies live longer than banyan trees.

                                b) What does the term 'life span' refer to?
                                c) Give one example each of a living being with a short and a long-life span.
                12. Teacher said Rita to conducted a plant
experiment at home. She said to place a
potted plant near a window and note the
observation every week. She noticed that the
stem slowly bent toward the sunlight. Later,
when she reported the plant, she saw that the
roots were growing downward, deep into the
                         soil.

                            a) Why did the stem slowly turn toward
                                the window over time?

                                  i. The plant was thirsty
ii. It was trying to avoid heat
iii. It was reacting to the direction of light
                                 iv. The pot was tilted

                            b) What can you infer from the direction in which the roots were growing?
                                  i. Roots move randomly
                                  ii. Roots grow toward light
iii. Roots follow water in the air
                                 iv. Roots respond to gravity
                            c) Why is it useful for stems to grow toward the light and roots to grow into the
                                soil?
                            d) If Rita kept the plant in a dark cupboard for many days, what changes might she
observe in its growth direction? Why?
                13. You see a wooden chair in under the tree. It is made from wood that came from the
                         tree.
                            a) Can you explain why this chair is considered non-
living even though it was once part of a living tree?
                            a) Think about your classroom or home. Can you name
two non-living things you see around you and
explain why they are considered non-living?
                14. Rahul noticed that when he fed his pet fish daily, it swam up to the top of the tank.

                                                                                                         3
