P. 2
7. a) During a nature walk, you found a rock, a butterfly, and a plastic bag. Which of
these shows signs of life?
b) Imagine you found something new in nature. What questions would you ask to
decide if it is living or non-living? Write at least three questions.
8. Ria, a curious 10-year-old girl, is watching her younger sister play with a remote-
control airplane in the garden. Her sister laughs with joy as she makes the airplane
take off, spin in the air, and land gently using the remote control. The toy airplane
follows all the commands perfectly—it moves forward, turns around, and even makes
sounds. Ria starts thinking: “The airplane moves just like a bird. It can even fly and
change directions. But is it a living thing like birds are?”
i. Explain why the movement of the toy airplane does not mean it is a living
thing. Use examples to support your answer.
ii. Identify and explain two features of a toy airplane that help you decide
whether it is a living or non-living thing.
9. Aarav and his cousin Meera are visiting their grandparents’ farm during the summer
holidays. One day, they notice that a small mango sapling planted last year has now
grown into a tall young tree with new branches and leaves. Nearby, they see a calf that
was born two months ago and is already much bigger and more active than before.
a) A calf growing into a cow is an example of:
i. Reproduction
ii. Movement
iii. Development of non-living things
iv. Growth
b) What do we mean by the term growth when talking about living organisms?
c) How is the growth of a plant like the mango tree different from the growth of
an animal like the calf?
10. Rohan visited a zoo and saw animals like lions, elephants, and zebras. He noticed that
lions looked similar but were different from tigers. The zookeeper told him that
animals which can breed among themselves and produce fertile young ones belong to
the same species. Later, Rohan saw a chameleon change its colour when someone
approached.
a) Why are lions considered the same species but not tigers?
i. They live in groups
ii. They eat similar food
iii. They can breed and produce fertile offspring
iv. They live in the jungle
b) The chameleon’s colour changing an example of-
i. Reproduction
ii. Response to stimulus
iii. Movement
iv. Breathing
c) Why do lions belong to the same species but not tigers?
