Page 2 - Ordering and Comparing Negative Numbers
P. 2

On the number line:
Numbers to the left are smaller

Numbers to the right are greater

               Quick Trick

               If all numbers are negative:

                   • Compare them without the minus sign

                   • Then reverse the order

               Example:
               Compare: -12, -45, -30
               Ignore minus: 12, 45, 30 → Order: 12, 30, 45

               Flip: -45, -30, -12

               Learning Outcomes

               Students will be able to:

                   • Define and give examples of negative numbers in real-life situations.

                   • Accurately place 2-digit negative numbers on a number line.

                   • Correctly compare negative numbers (e.g., recognize that -25 is greater than -40).

                   • Arrange a set of negative numbers in ascending or descending order.

                   • Explain their reasoning using the number line and vocabulary like "more than", "less
                       than", "closer to zero", etc.
