Page 2 - LN Life Cycle of a Butterfly
P. 2
2. Stage 2: The Larva (Caterpillar)
o After a few days or weeks, the egg hatches and out
comes a tiny caterpillar, also known as a larva.
o The caterpillar's main job is to eat and grow bigger. It
loves to munch on leaves.
o As it grows, it sheds its skin several times, which is
called moulting.
o This stage lasts for a few weeks. The caterpillar can
grow much bigger during this time.
3. Stage 3: The Pupa (Chrysalis)
o Once the caterpillar has eaten enough, it stops feeding
and forms a protective shell around itself. This stage is
called a pupa or chrysalis.
o Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar is going through a
big change. It is transforming into a butterfly!
o This stage can last anywhere from a few weeks to
several months, depending on the type of butterfly.
4. Stage 4: The Adult Butterfly
o After the transformation, the butterfly is ready to come
out of its chrysalis.
o At first, the butterfly's wings are soft and wet. It must
wait for them to dry and harden before it can fly.
o Once its wings are strong, the butterfly will fly away in
search of food and a mate to continue the cycle.
