Page 2 - Lesson note-Cl 8- Topic “Language & Communication ”
P. 2
~Barriers to Communication~
Communication can break down due to various barriers:
•Language Differences: Not understanding the language or accent of another person.
•Cultural Misunderstandings: Norms, gestures, or tones that differ between cultures.
•Technology Divide: Lack of access to digital devices or internet connectivity.
•Bias and Stereotypes: Prejudgments can cause us to misinterpret or ignore others.
Real-world example: A hand gesture that means “OK” in one country may be offensive in
another.
~Language and Culture~
Language is a carrier of culture. Through language, people learn social customs, stories, songs,
and moral values. Losing a language often means losing a whole worldview. Today, thousands
of languages are endangered, especially indigenous and tribal ones.
Multilingualism, or the ability to speak more than one language, is an asset. It enhances brain
development, promotes empathy, and improves global opportunities.
~How Communication Has Evolved~
•Early Humans used cave art, drum beats, and oral stories.
•Writing systems emerged (e.g., hieroglyphs, cuneiform).
•The printing press allowed mass communication.
•Today, we rely on digital platforms for global, instant communication.
While modern technology has made communication faster and more widespread, it also
introduces challenges—such as information overload, shortened attention spans, and online
bullying.
~Language, Power, and Influence~
Language is a tool of power. It can be used to influence, persuade, or manipulate. Politicians,
advertisers, and media houses carefully craft their messages to shape public opinion.
