8. Look at the images used
Fake news often uses unrelated or shocking images to attract clicks. Some people
earn money from clicks, so they use clickbait tactics. Images may be edited to make
stories seem real. Look for signs like missing objects, repeated patterns, or smudges.
Such edits suggest the content may not be trustworthy.
9. Does the headline seem legitimate?
People earn money from clicks, so clickbait headlines are common. Look for dramatic
or unrealistic headlines that sound made-up. The content is often dull, with
exaggerated headlines or images. This is done to attract more clicks and increase
revenue.
Interesting acronym of REAL:
R – ask, ‘Is this Real?’
E – ask ‘What Evidence is presented?’ (source, author, publication, website
address,
date and time, and any pictures)
A – ask ‘Does it all Add up?’ (use own knowledge, ask others, check the details
with
a little further research)
L -– Look around. (Do any other sources have the same story/news item; e.g. TV,
radio, magazine, newspaper etc.?)
