FAKE NEWS
The term “fake news” is given to false information that is deliberately created to trick
people into believing it is true and is often created for business or political reasons.
Why is it important for children to learn about fake news?
Fake news for kids can be confusing as the information presented online often looks
very believable. Some organisations exist to make money, while others produce fake
news to promote certain ideologies. While some fake news is simple misinformation,
it is important that children learn how to spot it so that they do not spread
misinformation themselves.
Getting children to learn how to spot fake news through learning the types of fake
news and its contents is a great way to help them develop critical thinking skills. It will
enable them to understand the concept of agenda, reliability, and validity.
Ways you can spot fake news.
1. Errors
Misinformation can be spotted through errors in pronouns, dates, and statistics.
Frequent spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) mistakes signal low quality. Such
errors suggest the content lacks proper checks and may be unreliable. They may
indicate untrained writers or scam sources. Minor mistakes are normal, but repeated
ones are a red flag.
