CHAPTER-2: POLYNOMIALS Lesson Notes-1
Definition of polynomial
Polynomial
Polynomial is an algebraic expression which includes constants, variables and
exponents. It is the expression in which the variables have only positive integral
powers.
Polynomial is an algebraic expression in which the powers of the variables are non-
negative integers.
Example
3
2
1. 4x + 3x + x +3 is a polynomial in variable x.
-1
2
2. 4x + 3x - 4 is not a polynomial as it has negative power.
3. 3x 3/2 + 2x – 3 is not a polynomial.
Expressions
Numeric Algebraic
• Numeric consist of numbers.
• Algebraic consist of both number and
variables.
• Polynomials are denoted by p(x), q(x), g(x) etc.
• Example:
2 + 5 − 3
2
2
• In the above polynomial 2x , 5x and −3 are called the terms of the polynomial.
2
• 2 and 5 are the coefficient of the x and x respectively.
• x is the variable.
• -3 is the constant term which has no variable.
