                                                   Lesson notes
           Movement in fish

               • The body of fish is specially designed for swimming.

               • It has a streamlined body- like a boat, thicker in middle and tapers at both ends.

               • This shape allows water to move easily around the body and offers the least
                  resistance to its flow.

               • The body is covered with scales.
               • It swims with the help of fins.

               • Fins help in maintaining the balance of the body and changing direction.

               • Fish uses its tail fin (caudal fin) to move and push forward through the water.

               • To move forward the tail moves side to side which creates a zig-zag movement and
pushes the water and propels the fish forward.

               • It has a swim-bladder (sac-like structure) filled with air and keeps the fish afloat.

           Movement in birds

                  • Most birds can fly.

                  • They can walk, hop or run and some can swim.
                  • Example of birds that can swim- Duck, geese, and swans.
