Page 2 - 3-Lesson Notes-Application of Contraction and Expansion
P. 2
➢ On cooling, the particles of a substance come back to their original state.
2. Application of Contraction and Expansion in Liquids:
➢ When the liquid is heated, the particles gain more energy and move rapidly or
vigorously.
➢ The movement overcome the forces of attraction between the particles,
allowing them to move freely, thus, increasing the volume.
➢ On cooling, the particles come back to their original positions.
3. Application of Contraction and Expansion in gases:
➢ Similarly, in the case of gases, on getting heated, they absorb a lot more
energy, and the inter-particle distances increase.
➢ At lower temperatures, the particles reduce their movement as they low
energy and the volume is decreased.
