                                        Subtopic- Properties of Magnet

                Properties of a magnet:
Magnets exhibit many interesting properties which are as follows:
               1. The attractive properties:
 The property of the magnet to attract the magnetic materials towards it is
known as attractive property of the magnet.
 The attractive property of magnets can act through non-magnetic substances
                       such as wood and paper.
 A magnet can move an iron nail placed in the wooden table from underneath
                       the table.
 For example, a magnet can move an iron nail placed on the wooden table
                       from underneath the table.

               2. Poles of a magnet:
 The two ends of a magnet are called poles of a magnet or magnetic poles.
 The magnetic force is maximum at the poles and minimum at the middle
                       portion.
 Every magnet has two poles- North Pole and South Pole.
 The Pole of the magnet that point towards the North direction is called the
                       magnet’s North Pole.
 The Pole of the magnet that point towards the south direction is called the
                       magnet’s South Pole.
 Magnetic poles are always in pairs.

                       The Directive property:
If a piece of magnetite is freely suspended in air, it always pointed to North-
                       South direction.
                       Magnetic axis
It is the imaginary line joining the two poles of a magnet.
                       Magnetic compass
A magnetic compass consists of a magnetic needle with pointed ends
mounted on a pivot about which it can freely rotate.
The north pole of the magnetic needle (red coloured needle) always points
                       towards the geographical north direction.
