Summary/NOTES:
The poem Antigonish is written by William Hughes Mearns who was an American
poet and educator. This is a poem about a mysterious, invisible, little man that
the narrator of the poem sees many times in his house. He does not enjoy
meeting this invisible man every day and wishes him to leave his home. The
narrator urges this invisible man to vanish by saying “go away” many times. He
also requests him not to slam the door. In the end he says that he ‘saw’ the
invisible man upon the stairs. He fervently wishes that the invisible man goes
away and does not return again. The poet is so terrified that he uses the phrases
“go away” repeatedly in the poem. The narrator in the poem expresses his fearful
thoughts and feelings about the mysterious, invisible person in his house.
