Jane Taylor narrates the attitude of care and gratitude by citing example of
helping ants.
A little black ant found a large grain of wheat
Too heavy to lift or to roll;
So he begged of a neighbour he happened to meet,
To help it down into his hole.
There is a little black ant who found a large grain of wheat which was too heavy to
be lifted or rolled. On his way, he met a neighbor whom he requested to help him
to lift the grain down to his hole.
"I've got my own work to look after," said he;
"You must shift for yourself, if you please;"
So he crawled off as selfish and cross as could be,
And lay down to sleep at his ease.
Despite of the begging of the little ant, the neighbor sternly replied that he had
his own work to look after, so the little ant should shift the heavy grain all by
himself and refused to help. Saying this, he just moved in a very selfish and
irritated manner and laid down to sleep peacefully. The neighbour’s sleeping was
very important than helping the little ant.
Just then a black brother was passing the road,
And seeing his brother in want,
Came up and assisted him in with his load,
For he was a good-natured ant.
The little ant being disappointed with the neighbour’s rude and selfish nature
kept on trying to lift up its heavy grain towards its hole. Just then, he met a black
brother who was passing by the road. Seeing the little ant’s struggle of lifting, the
big brother came up to him to lend a helping hand. The big brother is considered
to be a good natured ant as he was helpful in nature.
Let all who this story may happen to hear,
Endeavour to profit by it;
For often it happens that children appear
As cross as the ant, every bit.
