• Appointed as reader at the university of Calcutta, he
helped to set up the first post graduate anthropology
department in India.
• Awarded an honarary doctorate by German
University.
• Received the titles of ‘Rao Bahadur’ and ‘Dewan
Bahadur’ by Cochin state.
Sarat Chandra Roy
• He was a lawyer. He was a graduate and post
graduate in English.
• In Ranchi, he became the leading authority on
Culture and society of tribal people of Chota Nagpur
Region (Jharkhand).
• He had a keen interested in tribal society as a by
product of his professional need to interpret tribal
customs and laws for the court.
• He travelled extensively among tribal communities
and did intensive fieldwork among them.
• Roy published more than one hundred articles in
leading Indian and British academic journals.
• In addition to Monographs on various tribes like
Oraon, Mundas and Kharias.
• He became well known anthropologist in India and
Britain and was recognised as an authority on
Chotanagpur.
• Founded the journal ‘Man in India’ in 1922
