Lesson Notes
• In Indian society we read the constituents of Indian
Society.
• Indian Societies constitutes like caste, family,
marriage , Jajmani etc.
INDOLOGY
• It is an approach to tend to study Indian society.
• It is a creation of western Scholar.
• The first centre in Indology was started by Sir William
Jones at Calcutta in 1784 with the establishment of
Asiatic society.
Earliest and best known pioneers of Social Anthropology in
India and also accidental anthropologist :
1) L.K Ananthakrishna Iyer:
• College teacher in Cochin state.
• In 1902 he was asked by Dewan of Cochin to assist
with an ethnographic survey of the state.
• His work was appreciated by British anthropologists
and administrators of the time.
• He was the first self taught and anthropologist to
receive national and international recognition as a
scholar and an academician.
• He became lecturer in University of Madras.
