GHURYE ON CASTE AND RACE
Ghurye provides a detailed critique of the dominant theories about the
relationship between race and caste.
Race Caste
• Herbert Risley thought humans can be
divided into separate races on the basis
of physical characteristics (Length of
nose, size of skull etc)
• He argued caste originated in race
because different caste groups seemed
to belong to distinct racial types.
• Ghurye believed that Risley’s theory was
true only for north India that is racial
purity was preserved for only North India
and rest racial groups had been mixing features of Caste
with each other for a very long time.
Caste is an institution based on
segmental division
Caste is based on hierarchical
division
Involves restriction on Social
Interaction
Involves differential rights and duties
Restricts the choice of occupation
Involves strict restrictions on marriage
