❖ A law is an explicitly codified norm or rule.
❖ It is usually in written form comprising of formal rules by which society is
governed and it is applicable to all citizens.
❖ There are laws that specify how laws are to be made or changed, or
what is to be done if someone violates them.
❖ According to Roscoe Pound says that “ Law is an authoritative canon of
value laid down by the force of politically organised society”.
❖ Law is a product of conscious thought, deliberate attempts and careful
planning.
❖ Law apply to all citizens. It has binding force on every.
❖ Domination works through power but much of this power is actually
legitimate power or authority, a large part of which is codified in law.
Contestation, Crime and Violence
Contestation
• It refers to broad forms of insistent disagreement. It includes dissent or
protest against laws or lawful authorities.
• Ex- Counter culture among youth or youth rebellion.
• These are protests against prevalent social norms.
• The content of protest may include anything like hairstyles and clothing
fashions, language or lifestyles. It also include protest against law or
lawful authorities.
