The main reproductive organ in males is a pair of testes.
They are present in scrotal sacs outside the body and acts as a
thermoregulator and provides an optimal temperature for the formation of
sperms.
The sperms develop at a temperature 1-3 degree centigrade lower than the
body temperature. The life of sperms is greatly reduced if the temperature is
higher.
Male accessory glands
Accessory glands that are associated with the reproductive organs are-
Prostate gland and seminal vesicle.
Prostate gland secretes prostate fluid, one of the components of semen. This
fluid is slightly acidic and contains various enzymes, zinc and citric acid.
Seminal vesicle The sperms are temporarily stored in the seminal vesicle
where mucus and a watery alkaline fluid containing the sugar-fructose, mix
with the sperms. It provides sperm with a source of energy and helps with the
sperms motility.
The secretions of the prostate gland and the seminal vesicle thus help in the
transportation of sperms and provides nutrition.
Male Ducts
In males, the vas deferens and the urethra are the main ducts. Vas deferens
carries the sperms to the seminal vesicles.
A single vas deferens carries sperms from respective testis up to urethra.
Urethra acts as a common passage for sperms and urine. The contents of two
seminal vesicles i,e,sperms from vas deferens also join the urethra. Thus,
urethra carries urine from the bladder as well as sperms from the vas
deferens, through the penis.
